“There is no greater feeling as a director than seeing a project through from conception to final edit, and knowing that your creation has the potential to affect viewer’s lives – whether to make them laugh, cry, get angry or be inspired. I take great pride in making films that portray the power of the human spirit.”
Born and raised in Paris, France, Knowlton became fascinated with the creative world at a young age – mimicking his older brother’s illustrations, editing cassette mixtapes and making stop-motion claymation films. He was quickly drawn to pop culture and 90′s music videos, and spent numerous hours shooting his own adaptations of Michael Jackson and Beastie Boys videos.
An opportune internship with hip hop video icon Director Little X at HSI productions set the stage for Knowlton as he landed a once in a lifetime chance to work alongside Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch as an assistant editor at Oscilloscope Films. There, he worked on their Sundance hit film, Awesome; I Fuckin’ Shot that!, as well as the video portion of their album Solid Gold Hits.
Since then, he has been refining his unique style as a music video, commercial and film director and editor. He strives to tell compelling and inspiring stories shot in a vibrant, organic way, and enjoys every step of the creative process.
Knowlton’s most recent documentary, Lift Up, filmed in Haiti shortly after the 2010 earthquake, won several awards including the Documentary Directing Award at the Amsterdam Film Festival. He currently resides in LA, directing videos for clients such as Nike, Crown Royal, Buick, and NFL. In his spare time he dabbles in standup comedy, and enjoys growing tomatoes.
